Building Community

In chapter 9, one section that stood out to me the most was about how building a community is so important to public communication. At first I thought to myself before reading the section, "How can building a group/community help one communicate publicly?" Well it is one important part because we are building a group to communicate with that all have the same interests and will be able to have a great success with communication. It almost makes it easier in some cases. Some communities may have the same goals to reach, there for they don't have to clash most of the times, and others may just be  allowed to establish a truth between one another. Every person that was built into the community helps to add onto the cause and helps contribute successfully to the truthfulness of the group. I really would just say it makes public communication easier because instead of focusing so much time on informing the group or "community" with what your goal of the speech is about, it will allow that time to go more towards facts or even help buff up your credibility more.

A Powerful Man

I have recently heard President Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention about accepting his nomination for presidency. I have to say he did quite a wonderful job at it. President Obama’s speech was delivered like Michelle Obama’s speech by connecting with the audience and succeeding at his main goal; getting the citizens of the United States to give him their trust and vote for him.  President Obama’s strongest characteristics as a speaker are his passion in his words, the truth behind every claim of his, and the true meaning and credibility behind his speech being successfully delivered. As Obama was president for four years, he has established credibility to make the claims that he had made like Obama Care, unemployment rate, and his spending report. He has experienced and made those decisions and is able to make those claims knowing that they are true. His power and attractiveness with the audience both tie together. President Obama is an attractive speaker because he is the president and has power like no other in the United States (excluding Congress members).

The Motivational Woman

Michelle Obama is one of my favorite public speakers by far. Her words and style that she chooses for all of her speeches are so motivational for me.  Her recent speech at the Democratic National Convention was by far one of my favorite and most influencing on the people of the United States that look up to her. The thing that stood out to me most during her speech that made her communication with the audience more memorable was her organization of the speech and the language she chose. Michelle chose to speak about her personal life with her husband,  Barack, by sharing stories about them both to the audience. She also shared about her father and her family and connecting those people all together at the end. Her reasoning behind sharing stories and people from her personal life was to connect with the audience. Michelle wanted the audience to feel how she felt at that time. The passion behind her words and stories was delivered to simply make her facts and arguments stronger. I highly look up to this public speaker as one of my role model. I would definitively recommend anyone to give her their undivided attention one day and listen to her speeches.
I can’t really remember any speakers that stand out being bad in my recent times except for Mitt Romney at the Republican National Convention. I just remember the first five minutes of his speech because that is all I could watch. His facts we not even all true. Mitt only spoke his opinion and kept worrying about what his opponent has been doing wrong and bashing on him. Instead of being so negative, he should have tried to connect with the audience and speak the truth, not just opinion. I just could not connect with him and I had to change the channel before I got even more frustrated.

Week 2 - Q1

1). Consider the social constructionist perspective.  How do we "build worlds" through communication?  Think of some ideas we talk about in our culture that may not exist in other cultures.  How do these concepts contribute to our happiness or success (or the lack of these) in our culture?

The social constructionist perspective is where communication is a process where people use the tools that their culture provides and creates a representations of reality. It also empathizes the relationship between communication and reality. Having a social constructie perspective will help "build worlds" by using the tools that one was taught through their culture to communicate. In my culture, I was raised to communicate in a very respective way with people, especially those who are older than me. It is considered "rude" to not say "sir" or "ma'am" (in spanish) when being spoken to by an adult. The reality of that is that any words that we speak and effect the perspective others create for myself. This example contributes to the well-being and happiness in my life. I communicate in a very respective manner and in a way that sets others to know that they will always perceive me as being a respective person.

Introductory Post

Hi there everyone! My name is Michelle (my display name does spell it as Mishelle, it's my e-mail... just wanted to switch things up. Spell my name however!) I am a Communications major with a concentration in Public Relations. My communications experience would be that I have taken Com 1 only. However, in the work-field I have been an Assistant Manager at Jamba Juice for 3 years and am now currently a Teller for Wells Fargo. I have also headed fundraisers for Non-profit organizations. All of those positions require MAJOR communications skills. There is no way  would have been successful without the skill to effectively communicate. My interests would be helping people! I always go out of my way to help others in need. I also am a HUGE Philadelphia Eagles fan. I just love the team and sport and enjoy watching games with my dad. Other than the information above, I'm really excited for the class to gain more knowledge and pick up a few skills I don't already know.
